Chimney FAQs

Here’s a brief overview of some common chimney terminology

  • Chimney Inspection

It is very important to have your chimney inspected in order to prevent fire hazards and increase the lifespan of your fireplace. Some chimney issues we often encounter are: masonry deterioration, cracks in the flue vent, damaged chimney crown, creosote build up, and chimney obstruction.

  • Chimney Damper

A chimney damper is a device installed in a chimney flue that helps control the flow of air and gases. It can be opened or closed to regulate the draft, allowing smoke and fumes to exit the home when in use and preventing cold air or unwanted odors from entering when the fireplace or stove is not in operation.

  • Chimney Flashing

Chimney flashing is a weatherproofing material installed around the intersection of a chimney and the roof. Its primary purpose is to prevent water from seeping into the home where the chimney meets the roof.

  • Chimney Rebuild

A chimney rebuild involves repairing or reconstructing a chimney that has deteriorated or suffered damage. This process can address issues such as structural instability, water damage, or significant wear from weather exposure.

  • Chimney Repairs

There are countless amounts of things that can go wrong with your chimney; from holes in the mortar to deterioration due to exposure to harsh weather conditions and cracks along the lining, among other issues. You might notice there is something wrong with your chimney when smoke gets trapped inside the chimney or when you notice leakage, but you might not know exactly what’s wrong. Luckily, EM Chimney Contractor and Home Remodeling, LLC can identify the problem and repair it quickly.

  • Chimney Sweeps

Chimney sweeps are important because they prevent creosote from accumulating in the ventilation systems of your chimney. This includes the smoke chamber and flue liner. For more information go to https://www.fema.gov/fact-sheet/chimney-fire-precautions.

  • Chase Covers

A chase cover is a metal cover that fits over your chimney chase on chimneys with wood, metal, or vinyl sliding to prevent water from entering the chimney.

  • Fireplace Firebox

Fireplace fireboxes consist of many components working together to provide an adequate draft to safely convey all combustion to the exterior of the dwelling. If there is smoke returning into the house or a bad odor, contact us and we’ll identify the problem to give you a solution with a fair price.

  • Liners

This application may require the removal of the liner. This system requires the installation of a stainless steel liner from the bottom of the chimney to the top of the chimney. There are two ways to insulate the liner. An insulation blanket can be wra[[ed around the liner before the installation or TherMix chimney insulation.

  • Masonry Work

Masonry work has to do with brick spalling, loose bricks, sidewalks, and retaining walls. We have a team that specializes in solving your masonry problems. Many clients call us regarding broken or loose bricks, missing mortar joints, and water penetration in their chimneys. When you call EM Chimney LLC concerning any of these problems you will be visited by a technical expert who will offer you the best repair option for your project.

  • Prefabricated Chimneys

Prefabricated Chimneys, otherwise known as prefab chimneys, are manufactured fireplaces. The most obvious place where you can spot damage in a prefab chimney is when there are noticeable cracks in the refractory panels, which imitate bricks inside the fireplace.

  • Rain Caps

Any missing caps on top of the chimney need to be installed to prevent leaves, animals, and rain from entering the flue venting.

  • Smoke Chamber

A smoke chamber is the area located directly above the firebox in a chimney system. Its primary function is to gather and funnel smoke and gases from the fire into the flue, where they are directed outside.

  • Tuckpoint

Many chimneys have this problem; weak, cracked, or missing mortar joints. This can happen because there has been too much water penetration or because the amount of sand and cement was incorrect. EM Chimney can grant you a solution by repairing, guaranteed to last 2 to 3 years.

  • Vent Installation

Chimney vent installation is the process of setting up a venting system for a chimney, allowing smoke, gases, and heat from a fireplace, stove, or furnace to exit the home safely.
